Abstract

The field of anticancer metallodrugs is dominated by platinum based compounds and the so-called “DNA paradigm”, which presumes that the mechanism action of metallodrugs relies on direct DNA damage. However, in recent years, it has become increasingly evident that several cytotoxic metallodrugs exert their biological and pharmacological actions through DNA independent mechanisms. In this paper, a new cobaltII coordination compound was synthesized by using proton transfer mechanism. Obtained results show that it has successfully interacted with DNA and it binds to DNA and does not allow the denaturation of double helix. The reaction between CoCl2.2H2O, Salicylic acid (SalH), and Acridine (Acr) gave a new coordination compound formulated as (Acr)4[Co(Sal)3].nH2O. The title compound was characterized by elemental analysis, NMR, IR and UV/vis spectroscopies.
