Abstract

Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM) is one of the most attractive, affordable and fastest processes in manufacturing composites in comparison to conventional hand-lay up vacuum bagging (VB). In this research, experimental procedures were designed according to ASTM standards to characterize the physical and mechanical behavior of EPOLAM 2040 epoxy resin reinforced by 7 plies stitch biaxial E-glass, fabricated by these two different processes, VARTM and VB. The properties were determined by density, tensile and flexure tests. The results show that the VARTM process leads to higher tensile and flexural properties compared to those manufactured by the VB method. Moreover, VARTM process offers more advantages comparing with VB method such as better fibre volume fraction, which results in stronger and lighter laminates.
