An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of fruit hydroalcoholic extract of Withania coagulans (WC) and 1, 25-dihydroxycholecalciferol on histological properties of male chickens. Diets were arranged factorially (2×3×2) consisted of a positive control with adequate Ca and nonphytate P and a negative control diet      ), three levels of Withania coagulans (0, 100 and 200 mg/kg diet), and two levels of 1, 25-dihydroxycholecalciferol     et). At 21 day of age birds provided with 100 mg/kg of WC had a significant higher cortical thickness (P<0.05) and tended to increase at 42 day. Addition of only 100 mg/kg WC resulted in maximum width of mineralized zone (2448.14 m) whereas supplementation of 1, 25-(OH) 2 D3 to same diet revealed minimum width of mineralized zone (1768.80 m). Regardless of dietary WC level, in negative control diet addition of 0.5 g/kg of 1, 25-(OH) 2 D3 decreased width of cortical thickness whereas in positive control no statistical effect was found. At 42 d of age, the main effects of control and WC on width of proliferation and cortical thickness approached significant (P=0.054 and P=0.065 respectively). The width of mineralized zone was significantly increased in response to addition of 1, 25-(OH) 2 D3 (P<0.05). The results of this experiment indicated that supplementation of 100 mg/kg fruit hydroalcoholic extract of Withania coagulans and 1, 25-dihydroxycholecalciferol exhibit beneficial effects on bone characteristics (cortical thickness and mineralize width respectively)
