Abstract

This work presents estimation of fetal and maternal organ doses from I-131 and I-123 sodium Iodide and Tc-99m pertechnetate incorporated to the mother in the early pregnancy stage. Adult female reference Computational phantom was used to estimate organ doses using Monte Carlo transport method. The results showed that the fetal dose is less than the estimated absorbed dose to uterus. Also, in diagnostic procedures, there is not enough imaging radiation dose to cause harmful effects. Management of thyroid diseases during pregnancy requires special considerations because ionizing radiation can have adverse effects on the fetus. Little research is available to guide women and doctors in these emergency situations. These more realistic calculations helps physician to decide about Therapeutic or diagnostic abortion.
