Abstract

Propofol (2,6 - di-isopropyl phenol) is a lipid soluble anesthetic drug that widely used as induction and maintenance drug in veterinary anesthesia. To evaluate propofol effect on liver and kidney function six clinical healthy dogs (weighed 19.33 ± 7.44 kg) were selected. Anesthesia induced by 8 mg/kg from a 1% propofol solution and maintained by 0.3 mg/kg/min continuous infusion of propofol. The main criteria of anesthesia was lateral recumbency of the animals during study, however Heart Rate, Pulse oximetry, Respiratory rate and temperature were measured during anesthesia in order to monitor anesthesia status. A control serum sample was taken 24 hours before anesthesia and serial samples were taken on immediately before anesthesia, minutes 2, 10, 30 and 60 during anesthesia and hours 2, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 after anesthesia. Induction of Anesthesia was smooth and eventless with the calculated doses but totally 4.45 mg/kg/min of propofol was used for maintenance of anesthesia that was higher than calculated doses. Serum concentration of albumin, total protein, glucose, urea and creatinine and serum activity of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) was measured by spectrophotometry method and an autoanalyzer (Biotecnica targa 3000, Italy). Data was analyzed using two way ANOVA and p values of 0.05 and less considered as significant. No significant changes recorded in biochemical parameters in comparison to zero time. The results of this study showed that administration of propofol has no effect on biochemical indices of liver and kidney in dogs.
