Abstract

In recent years, pedestrians have received low priority for use the road compared to other modes particularly motorized vehicles. So, pedestrian safety requirements and their facilities must be taken into account. Application of countdown timers has associated with traffic signal and show the remained time for completing the safe cross through crosswalk. This paper focused on coordination between pedestrians and vehicles at signalized crosswalks. Results of interview performed from many road users at main intersections of Tehran with time interval problems were presented to identify drivers behavior waited for red timer. It was found that red light timer have had significant effect on driver's calmness before moving. Also, another interview was performed from pedestrians about reason of red light violations in main intersection of Tehran. At the end, an optimized crosswalk signal design algorithm was proposed to minimize vehicles delay time and red light pedestrian violations.
