Abstract

Doxorubicin is one of the common medications exerted in treatment of different types of cancer like prostate cancer. In addition to cancerous cells, it causes damage to normal cells and tissues including heart. Based on latest remedy procedures, in order to counteract the side effects of chemical therapy drugs, the combined effect of them with light sensitive materials are used. These materials will be excited in the presence of light exposure and after transferring their energy to other molecules such as oxygen, reactive oxygen species are produced. This medical procedure is called photodynamic therapy. So far, the effect of zinc oxide nanofluid and UVA radiation in combination with doxorubicin on DU145 cells is not studied. In this study, the influence of doxorubicin alone and combined with low concentrations of zinc oxide nanofuid in the presence and absence of UVA radiation on DU145 cells was analysed using MTT assay. The results showed that cytotoxicity of doxorubicin increases in low doses of zinc oxide nanofluid and in the presence of UVA radiation than absence of UVA exposure. These results suggested that UVA light causes zinc oxide nanofluid excitation and increases doxorubicin cytotoxicity.
