Abstract

Because of energy crisis and environmental affinity, fuel cells (FCs) are widely investigated and considered as one of the most important power recourses[1]. Among several alcohols such as methanol, ethanol, propanol and butanol [1], which can be used in a direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs), ethanol is the most promising one due to considerable energy capacity (˷8 kWh/kg), nontoxicity, biological renewability, easy handling and storing unlike hydrogen fuel [2,3]. It has been reported that ethanol is oxidized to acetaldehyde and CO2 by a dual-path mechanism in which the oxidation to acetaldehyde and CO2 was occurred by the dehydrogenation of adsorbed ethanol and adsorbed intermediates, respectively [4] The use of Fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) modified with clay and platinum particles was studied for the electrocatalytic oxidation of ethanol by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. After preparation of a Fluorine doped tin oxide as an electrode matrix by dropping clay, its surface was potentiostatically coated with Pt nanoparticles at −0.2V vs. SCE in an aqueous solution of 0.2MHClO4 containing 0.002MH2PtCl6. The electrocatalyst was characterized by EDS, SEM and cyclic voltammetry. The effective parameters on electrocatalytic oxidation of the ethanol, i.e. the amount Pt loadings, concentration of Clay and concentration of ethanol were investigated and the results were discussed. This modified electrode showed an enhanced current density over the other Ptmodified electrodes making it more attractive for fuel cell applications.
