Abstract

The history of American literature is full of the books by female authors who talk about the oppression undergone by women. Among them, the black writers have gained such an important position which can’t be ignored. In fact, they have tried to write about the physical and mental anguish of African-American females and their fight to conquer it through their master-slave narratives. These women are mostly shown as very strong and especially mothers whose family obligations define their behavior as wives, women and social individuals. This article seeks to take an African-American feminist approach towards Harriet Jacobs’ novel, “The Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl” to see how African-American women and especially Linda as the central character of the novel underwent oppression, marginalization, loss of identity and unjust treatment due to enslavement and colonization which were themselves the result of racism and sexism by white masters. The findings of the study shows that, what has been attempted to be shown in the study, has been achieved; and these are: the snags and deprivations in the personal life of a slave and her escape to freedom which seemed impossible at first owing to being chased by the past life’s bitter memories even after getting rid of the masters‟ colonization.
