Abstract

This paper provides a convergence study of the Simplified Bernoulli Trials (SBT) collision algorithm implemented in the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method on the simulation of the one dimensional Fourier flow problem. These investigations have been followed by comparing the DSMC-calculated velocity moments, as employed in the Sonine-polynomial coefficients ak, with Chapman-Enskog (CE) theoretical predictions. In addition, the convergence metric is taken as the ratio of the DSMC-calculated bulk thermal conductivity, KDSMC to the infinite-approximation, CE theoretical value, K. The numerical accuracy of the DSMC method is restricted with three parameters: time step, cell size, and number of computational particles per cell. The dependency of these discretization errors for the SBT collision algorithm have been investigated in comparison with the conventional collision algorithm, i.e., no time counter (NTC). These investigations reveal that SBT algorithm not only follows NTC predictions but also achieve accurate results with lower particles compared to the NTC.
