Abstract

It is a common belief that incorporating all senses in class can stimulate all parts of our brain, facilitating and expediting the process of learning. As such, educators have designed a number of techniques to engage all senses in learning. This multi-sensory movement can be called thick-slice sensory education. For some reasons, sometimes it is not feasible to employ multi-sensory education, and hence teachers rely mostly on the auditory (verbal) sense to teach a concept. Unlike this common belief, which favors thick education and capitalizes on all senses to effectively and tangibly convey knowledge, thin-slice sensory education, by using a number of techniques, including metaphors, analogies, images, stories, and memories, attempts to provoke learners` imagination, and virtually emotionalize (creating visual, kinesthetic, inner, or arch emotioncies) learners to be deeply involved in the process of learning. The efficiency of thin education hinges on the verbal expertise of the teacher, which may leave a lot to the imagination of the learners. In fact, the teacher employs a wide variety of verbal techniques to compensate for the learners` sense deprivation. In the end, it is discussed that thin-slice sensory education can occasionally be more effective than thick-slice sensory education.
