Abstract

Background:One of the fundamental developmentaladvantages of a humanbeing is in his/herhands. People achievefine workability with both handsand avoidlimbimbalance, low back pain, and neck pain; while the amputation of onlyone hand eliminatesall of theseadvantages.Aconsiderable number of bionic hands have hence been developedto datethat aredrivenby either the brainor the movementof the remainingmuscles, through EMG or EEG signals. These methods have high implementation and maintenance cost and are very sensitive to sensor displacement. Method:Toward the implementation of bionic hand, anovel movementindicator of muscles is proposedhere based onmagnetic fields. To realize this concept, a magnetic tag is implanted in the forearmmuscle. Also, a magnetic sensor is placed around the forearmcorresponding to the magnetic tag. The sensor measuresthe magnetic field of atag, so as long as voluntary muscle contractures, the magnetic tagisdisplaced. The movementof the magnetic tagcauses magnetic field changes.A pre-defined algorithm maps the magnetic field into ninelevelsindicatedby nineLEDs. Multiple tags extendthe functionality of the indicator. In this work, three tags are implanted in threeseparatemuscles of the forehand.According to fluoroscopy imaging, tagsare attached to muscles with more movement. Results:The patient is asked to do predefinedtasks(Palmar Flexion, Dorsi Flexion, thumb flexion, thumb extension, fingers flexion, and fingersextension), whilea wearable pre-designed gadget quantizesthe measured magnetic field into ninelevels. Muscle contraction/expansionshowsmultiple levelsof flexion/extension by LEDs.Conclusion:Anovel paradigm for indicating the movement of muscles is proposed. Considering simplicity, robustness, and economic acceptance over traditionalmethods, evidence shows that this method could be a good alternative for traditional methods, thatare throughEEG and EMG,to infer muscle movement.
