Abstract

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of conditioning time and bentonite-based pellet binder (G. Bind) on pellet quality, performance, serum biochemical indices, small intestine morphology and nutrient digestibility of growing broilers (d 11-24). A total of 810 day-old male broilers were randomly assigned to 9 treatments with 6 replicates each in a completely randomized design with a 3 (G. Bind levels of 0.00, 0.75 and 1.50%) × 3 (conditioning times of 0, 2 and 4 minutes) factorial arrangement. Results showed that interaction of 2 min. conditioning time with 1.5% G. Bind significantly increased pellet quality characteristics and also improved growth performance parameters in broilers (P< 0.05). Dietary treatments had no significant effects on carcass weight, serum lipids, glucose, and hepatic enzymes. Broilers fed diets conditioned for 2 min. and contained 1.5% G. Bind decreased (P< 0.05) relative intestinal length and increased (P< 0.05) villus height and surface area. Combination of conditioning and 0.75% G. Bind significantly improved nutrients (such as AME, CP, EE and P) retention in broilers. In conclusion, 2 min. conditioning diets contained 1.5% bentonite based pellet binder could improve pellet quality and economically important traits in broilers.
