Abstract

The histology and histochemistry of the esophagus, stomach, small intestines and large intestines were examined in owl and hedgehog. Samples were immersed in 10% neutral buffered formalin solution and then through a series of graded alcohols, xylene and eventually into paraffin wax. Sections at a thickness 6 μm, stained with haematoxylin and Eosin, Periodic acid Schiff (PAS) and alcian blue. Thickness of some layers of the alimentary canal was measured. Also, measurements of villus height, crypt depth, goblet cell number and epithelium thickness were made (SEM were determined for both animals). The goblet secretions (mucous) showed negative reaction in PAS and positive reaction in alcian blue stains. Histological differences and the effect of factors like villus height, crypt depth and goblet cell number on the nutrition has been discussed. The results were compared with the available data on the other species.
