Abstract

This study was aimed to evaluate the degradability fractions of dry matter of different variety of Dried Citrus pulp (DCP) using in situ technique. DCP as a by-product of juices extracting factory has a desirable potential for ruminates. In situ DM degradability were estimated for different sources of citrus pulp; orange (Citrus sinensis), tangerine (Citrus reticulate), lemon (Citrus auranifolia) and grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) using the modified in situ polyester bag technique described by Ørskov (1999). Dried sample were ground to pass through a 2-mm screen and weighed (5 g DM) into the polyester bags (3 bags for each sample at each time). The bags were incubated in the rumen of three fistulated steers for 0, 2, 4, 8, 12, 24, 36, 48, 72 and 96 h. Data were subjected to analysis of variances using SAS program. Fraction ‘a’ was higher in Citrus paradisi (63%) and lower for Citrus aurantifolia (32%). However, Citrus paradisi and Citrus aurantifolia had lowest and highest fraction of ‘b’ (36% vs. 66% respectively). C. Sinensis cul.siahvaras had a high rate of degradability among other DCP (0.01, 0.15, 0.14, 0.10, 0.01, 0.01, 0.10, 0.07, 0.09 and 0.14 ml/g DM /h for C. Sinensis cul. Tamson, C. Sinensis cul.siahvaras, C. Sinensis cul. Brohen, Citrus unchiu, C. reticulata cul. Page, C. reticulata cul. Celemantin, C. reticulata cul.younesi, Citrus aurantifolia, Citrus aurantium and Citrus paradisi respectively). Potential of degradability of Citrus unchiu was higher than other DCP (99, 98, 99, 99, 99, 95, 98, 97, 96 and 98% for C. Sinensis cul. Tamson, C. Sinensis cul.siahvaras, C. Sinensis cul. Brohen, Citrus unchiu, C. reticulata cul. Page, C. reticulata cul. Celemantin, C. reticulata cul.younesi, Citrus aurantifolia, Citrus aurantium and Citrus paradisi respectively). Obtained results from this experiment indicated that DCP has a high potential as a feed sources in livestock and their fraction of degradability in rumen are desirable.
