Abstract

This review intends to respond to a few questions: Does the globalization process influence developed and developing communities in different ways? Is it possible to nullify or reduce any negative consequences that could result from globalization? What kind of help psychology can offer to protect native values, believes, and national identities? In response to the first question, concept of globalization will be explained in terms of two approaches: (a) the goal of developed societies that is to globalize their own viewpoints and ideologies; and (b) the goal of developing societies that is to decide whether or not accept and/or accompany with prevailing ideas of developed societies. Therefore, the second and the third questions will be discussed in the light of expected influences of globalization on changing attitudes, values, and believes of developing communities, especially those from the East. In this regard, and in connection with the goal of preserving social and personal values, various themes will be explained, including changing attitudes, persuasion and propaganda from social psychology. In response to the third question, we address engrossing William McGuire and Dimitri Papageorgis` (1961) inoculation effect, which explains methods that help preserve certain believes against opposing ideas and views. Taking the assumption that wide spreading information technologies leave no place to hide from globalization, we would recommend inoculation theory to resist against unwanted cultural alienation. This way, families and formal educational systems can vaccinate children and adolescents against undesirable, but foreseen, changes in their attitudes and values. Moreover, we would recommend teaching critical thinking via formal and informal educational systems; rather than passively accept or aggressively reject all aspects of globalization.
