Nano-crystalline indiumoxide(In2O3) particleshavebeensynthesizedbysol–gelandhydro-thermal techniques.Asimplehydro-alcoholicsolutionconsistingindiumnitratehydrateandcitricacid(in sol–gel method)and1,4-butandiol(inhydro-thermalmethod)havebeenutilized.Thestructural properties ofindiumoxidenano-powdersannealedat450 1C (forbothmethods)havebeen characterized bytheX-raydiffraction(XRD),transmissionelectronmicroscopy(TEM),scanning electronmicroscopy(SEM),andspecificsurfacearea(SSA)analysis.Structuralanalysisofthesamples shows cubicphaseinsol–gelandcubic-hexagonalphasemixtureinhydro-thermallypreparedparticles. The nano-particlespreparedbysol–gelmethodhavenearlysphericalshape,whereashydro-thermally- made onesdisplaywire-andneedle-likeshapeinadditiontothesphericalshape.TheobtainedIn2O3 nano-particlessurfaceareaswere23.2and55.3insol–gelandhydro-thermalmethods,respectively. The opticaldirectbandgapofIn2O3 nano-particlesweredeterminedtobe 4.32 and 4.24 eVfor sol–gel andhydro-thermalmethods,respectively.Thesevaluesexhibit 0.5 eVblueshiftfromthatthe bulk In2O3 (3.75 eV),whichisrelatedtotheparticlesizereductionandapproachingthequantum confinementlimitofnano-particles.
