Abstract

In ruminants, ionophores have been used to enhance ruminal fermentation. However, because of human health concerns, plant extracts and essential oils are used as alternative natural feed additives in replacement of ionopheres (Garcia-Gonzalez et al., 2008). The amount of gas produced from a feed is used as an index of its fermentability potential (Menke and Steingass, 1988). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of peppermint (Mentha piperita) essential oil on the fermentation potential of lucerne hay (LH) and cottonseed hulls (CH).
