An advanced technology known as super sonic separator (3S) is introduced to the world at the turn of the millenium. The first industrial scale process was initially developed by Twister Ltd. for use in oil and gas industry. Extensive modeling and simulation of this novel process is performed in the present article using various equations of state for estimation of real fluid thermodynamic properties, for prediction of 3S separation efficiency and compare it with other conventional separation processes. The simulation results prove the powerful capabilities of supersonic separators for removal of water and heavy hydrocarbons from natural gas by controlling design parameters such as increasing inlet pressure at constant inlet temperature or controlling separator backpressure. Furtheremore, correct prediction of normal shock wave location has a crucial effect on the overall separation efficiency of the process for effective control of water and hydrocarbon dew points of natural gases.
