Abstract

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have potential applications in biosensors, tissue engineering and biomedical . However, there is limited data available concerning the biological properties and toxicity of CNTs. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the inflammatory behaviors of human mononuclear cells after exposure to single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT). For this purpose the expression level of a number of innate immunity receptor genes in human monocyte culture with SWCNT were analyzed. Real time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was employed in order to detect and quantify the expression level of several toll like receptors (TLRs) genes and CD14 molecule after culturing the human monocytic cells with various concentrations of SWCNT. The results demonstrated that there is a considerable difference in patterns of gene expression between cells treated with SWCNT versus untreated cells.
