Abstract

Introduction Abdominal herniation is particularly common in egg-lying hens, and may be associated with trauma, abdominal masses, egg binding, tenesmus or endocrine abnormalities. The entire abdominal musculature is gradually stretched apart along the line of the linea alba. Case History Five common mynas (one male and four female) were presented to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad with a painless, reducible swelling in the ventral abdominal region close to the cloaca. The mynahs ranged in age from 9 to 12 months (mean = 15.8 months) and included four female and one male. Duration of abdominal swelling was 5-60 days (33.2 days). After physical examination, the clinical diagnosis of abdominal hernia was confirmed by radiographic examination. Under general aesthesia, a ventral midline celiotomy was performed. The contents of the hernial sac were reduced into the abdominal cavity and the linea alba tear and skin were sutured in a standard two-layer closure using a simple continuous suture pattern with Vicryl no. 5/0. Results Primary healing occurred in all of them; and in follow up examination for 6 months after surgery there were no complication and recurrence of hernia. Conclusion This procedure is safe and can be recommended as a curative method for repair of abdominal ventral hernia in mynah.
