Abstract

One of the most important applications of semiconductor nanoparticles (NPs) is their photocatalytic activity degradation of toxic chemicals. It arises from their quantum-size effects. Among semiconductor NPs, zinc sulfide (ZnS) has received considerable attention due to their special functions in photocatalysis [1]. In this project, ZnS NPs were fabricated via sonochemical method using zinc acetate as the starting material. The obtained NPs were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction analysis, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, FTIR spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Dyes are one of the important classes of pollutants, and the presence of even trace concentration of dyes in effluent is highly visible and undesirable. The various methods have been suggested to handle the dye removal from water such as biodegradation, coagulation, adsorption, advanced oxidation processes, and the membrane process [2–4]. Among these methods, adsorption occupies a prominent place in dye removal. In this project, the removal of reactive black 5 was carried out in aqueous solutions in a series of experiments by ZnS NPs. The removal of this dye was examined by varying experimental conditions such as the amount of ZnS NPs, contact time, concentration, pH, and temperature. The experimental data were compared with the famous kinetic models and kinetic parameters were calculated.
