Wound is a break in the outer layer of skin. There are different methods for treatment of wounds, such as topically or orally administration of medicinal drugs or herbal remedies. Persian shallot, Allium hirtifolium belongs to the same genus of garlic and naturally growing in different parts of Iran. In this study, the wound healing activity of hydro-alcoholic extract of A .hirtifolium Boiss, on full-skin-thickness wounds evaluated. Four adult albino rats weighing 165±35 g were selected. Under general anesthesia, four full-thickness wounds were made on the dorsal area of each animal, right side wounds treated as experimental groups and left side wounds treated as control groups. One day after creation of wounds, the gel form solution of mixed extract of A. hirtifolium and methylcellulose were applied to the experimental wounds at 100 mg/kg topically while the wounds in control groups treated with the extract-free solution. Wounds were daily treated for 12 days. At days 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12, digital photos of wounds provided and by using of Scion image software, the percentage of contraction, epithelialisation and speed of healing were measured. The results showed that A. hirtifolium can accelerate wound healing by increasing the rate of epithelialisation. We conclude that A. hirtifolium extract may be clinically useful in management of open wounds treatment.
