Abstract

Preparation of suitable catalysts was concerned in production of biodiesel from oils with high FFA as west cooking oil. In this study, the effect of loading strontium oxide over sulfated zirconia in catalytic activity was investigated. These catalysts were analyzed by x-ray diffraction and BET and it was observed that Sr-promoted sulfated zirconia has higher activity to esterification of oleic acid due to its higher percents of tetragonal phases of zirconia and the little particle size. Then, the optimized conditions in FAME production in esterification of oleic acid with methanol in present SrO/S-ZrO2 were studied. It converted above 95% of oleic acid to FAME at condition of 100 oC, 3wt.% of catalyst and molar ratio of 9 methanol/oleic acid for 45 min.
