Abstract
We report effects of alcoholic extract of whole tarantula cubensis (Theranekron®), on healing of skin wounds in 5 dogs. Under general anesthesia, symmetrical control and treated skin wounds (20×20 mm) were created on the dorsum of each dog. Wounds were treated with 0.4ml tarantula extract subcutaneously (SC) and 0.4ml normal saline (control wound). Healing was monitored by digital images of wounds taken at 0, 3, 6, 12, 15, 18 and 21. Areas of epithelialization and granulation tissue were measured using Scion Image software allowing percentages of wound contraction, epithelialization and healing to be calculated. Epithelialization occurred by day 3 on treated wounds and at day 5 in control wounds. Results showed no significant differences in percentage of wound contraction and epithelialization between test and control wounds up to day 9 but by day 12 and 15 improved healing values may have occurred in treated wounds.
