Abstract

Flower colour in tulip is mainly determined by the composition pigments of anthocyanins. Its development and regulation are influenced by phytohormones and sucrose. Here, we investigated the interplay between three phytohormones and sucrose to identify variations in anthocyanins, total flavonoids, and morphological changes of tulip. The effect of abscisic acid (ABA) at 5 and 10 mg.L-1, gibberllic acid (GA3) at 300 and 500 mg.L-1, jasmonic acid (JA) at 50 and 100 µM and their interaction with sucrose at 1 and 2 g.L-1 were analysed by HPLC. The results showed that ABA and JA treatments induced anthocyanin production and increased total flavonoids, but reduced vegetative growth parameters and decreased postharvest performance compared to the control. Moreover, a review of the HPLC charts revealed that ABA and JA stimulate the production of pelargonidin pigments and increased total relative amount of anthocyanin content. Again, GA3 induced the production of cyanidin pigment with enhancing the flower colour composition and postharvest performance as well as total flavonoids. Though positive results were obtained from the sucrose effect on anthocyanin pigments, there was no significant effect on the quantification of different phytochemicals. Nevertheless, combining it with plant hormones showed a significant increase in the accumulation of anthocyanin and total flavonoids. These results emphasize sucrose with plants’ hormones as supplementary molecules involved in the accumulation of plant secondary metabolite. These results are fully consistent with the highest amount of anthocyanins that are obtained from the combination of plant hormones and sucrose.
