Comparative literature plays an influential role in different branches of literary criticism. Since adaptation studies is a sub-branch of comparative literature, this paper provides the readers with one of the recent findings of comparative literature in adaptation studies. The Last Step (2012), directed, produced, and written by Ali Mosaffa and mainly based on “The Dead” (1914) by James Joyce (1882-1941), is one of the most recent Iranian film adaptations. Drawing on Linda Hutcheon’s theory of adaptation, this study investigates why and how Mosaffa has adapted “The Dead”, focusing on the roles of Mosaffa and Hatami as the main adapters, Iranian audience, and different contexts. Furthermore, we explore the interpretation of the indigenized adaptation alterations in the Iranian context. The director’s awareness of the famous western literary works as the symbolic capital plays a significant role in choosing the source text. After analyzing characterization and setting, along with the reception context of adaptation, audience, and the adapters’ art careers, the results showed that The Last Step is successful in indigenizing Joyce’s short story.
