Abstract

Biodegradable blend membranes of polybutylene succinate/polyurethane were fabricated and applied to harvest Chlorella sorokiniana microalgae. The membrane hydrophilicity was enhanced by adding polyurethane to polybutylene succinate. The addition of polyurethane to polybutylene succinate up to 20 wt% improved the pure water flux of the membranes and reduced their fouling tendency. In microalgae harvesting using the membranes prepared in this study, total retention of microalgae was achieved. Blending polybutylene succinate with polyurethane up to the blend ratio of 80:20 was beneficial to the harvesting of Chlorella sorokiniana microalgae by boosting the permeate flux, concentration factor, and volume reduction factor by 2.27, 6.80, and 6.16-fold, respectively.
