Abstract
The interaction between shear and patch loading, specified in several recent design codes, has been reviewed. Criteria for combined shear and patch loading, given in codes of practice BS 5400 and BS 5950, have been checked. The results obtained indicate safe but unduely conservative design criteria. An improved design procedure for plate girders subjected to combined shear and patch loading has been proposed, which shows satisfactory correlation with the available test data
