Abstract

This paper is concerned with optimization of dynamic response. The problem reported herein seeks determination of the height profile of a simply supported beam for maximizing its tip velocity when released from a deflected state. This problem is somewhat a simplified simulation of optimization of a diving board. The optimization is carried out using Genetic Algorithm and Davidon-Fletcher-Powell (DFP) methods. It is found that the Genetic Algorithm method is more suited for the problem and resulted in 407% improvement of the tip velocity with respect to a uniform beam.
