In this paper we study general solutions and Hyers-Ulam-Rassias stability of the following function equation \\begin{equation}\\label{0} (4-k)f(\\sum_{i=1}^{k}x_{i})+\\sum_{j=1}^{k}f((\\sum_{i=1,i\\not=j}^{k}x_{i})-x_{j}))=4\\sum_{i=1}^{k}f(x_{i}),~ k\\geq3 \\end{equation} on Banach spaces. It will be shown that this equation is equivalent to the so-called quadratic functional equation.
