Abstract

In the current research medium density polyethylene matrix nanocomposites reinforced with different clay content have been produced using a planetary ball mill. The morphology of all milled samples including pure polyethylene and polyethylene-clay nanocomposites has been examined by a scanning electron microscopy. To investigate the effect of milling time and clay content on the particle size of polyethylene powder, sieve analysis has been used. The result shows that during milling the regular shape of pure polyethylene powder convert to the flake shapes and the average particle size of polyethylene powder increases by increasing the milling time because welding mechanism is prominent. Also, It shows that the presence of the clay can increase the maximum particle size. Also increasing the clay content can decrease the milling time to reach the same maximum particle size.
