Abstract

The bidirectional evolutionary structural optimization (BESO) method is an extension of the Evolutionary Structural Optimization (ESO) method, which can address various topology optimization problems. The BESO method, in some topologies is stuck in local optimums and cannot converge to the global one. This paper presents a novel criterion for addition procedure used in BESO method with stress criterion. The new procedure is applied to two common structures and the results are compared with those obtained from traditional method of addition. In comparison with the traditional BESO, the proposed formulation results in an optimum topology with a lesser iterations. In some cases, the shapes are more compatible with the ones obtained from an analytical solution.
