Abstract

In this research the extraction and measurment of fluoxetine in waste waters were carried out using a novel solid phase microextraction (SPME) technique namely sol-gel in hallow fiber. The sol – gel process involves evolution of inorganic networks through theformation of a colloidal suspension (sol) and gelationof the sol to form a network in continuous a liquidphase (gel). In this work the sol-gel synthesis procedures basically consists of three major steps: prehydrolysis of the inorganic precursor in which a properadding sequence of the components is desired; injection of the sol into fiber; insitu gelation and subsequent aging and drying of the sorbent at room temperature. It is considered that the structure of gel is established at the time of gelation. Subsequent processes such as aging, drying, stabilization, and densification all depend upon the gel structure. The sol becomes a gel when it can support a stress elastically.This is generally defined as the gelation point or gelation time, tgel. At this point, the system evolvesfrom a sol, where there are individual particles more orless weakly interacting with each other, to a gel, whichbasically becomes a continuous molecule occupyingthe entire volume. The optimal tgel in this research is 24 hours. The other different parameters that affected the microextraction process such as pH of the aqueous solution, extraction time, aqueous sample volume, surfactant addition and agitation speed were studied and optimized. The method is rapid, simple, easy and inexpensive and offers higher efficiency and enrichment more than other microextraction techniques (EF>2500). The method is evaluated carefully but further study needs to be done to continue this project.
