Abstract

A pile of granular materials subjected to a vertically induced external vibration shows different complex behavior such as surface structure formation, spontaneous heap formation or convection. A common feature of all these behaviors is that the particles located at the free surface of the granular bed of materials lose contact with their neighbors for at least a small period of their oscillations. If a granular material is agitated in a way so that the particles at the surface separate from their neighbors we call the material to be fluidized. The objective is to present a numerical simulation analogy in order to model a column of spherical particles subjected to a vertical vibration. The simulation method is based on object-oriented methodologies and encoded in C++ programming language. The model consists of a column of steel spheres placed above a plate. The column of spheres is forced to oscillate when the base plate moves up and down. Particles are treated as contacting visco-elastic bodies which can deform after hitting each other. Contact forces between particles are computed using deformation geometry, material properties and dynamics of particles. Knowing the forces and moments acting on particles in each time step, equations of particle motion are solved by using the well known fifth-order Gear predictor–corrector scheme. Thus the positions, velocities and accelerations of particles were obtained. A good agreement is seen between the experimental data and those obtained through this simulation.
