Abstract

In multiethnic societies, cultural communication between ethnic groups reduces ethnocentrism and shortens social distance. The results of a survey study of eight ethnic groups in Iran (Fars, Turkish, Baluch, Turkman,Talesh, Arab,Kurd and Lour, 2000-1) are in line with this hypothesis. Correlation analysis of three variables, namely, ethnocentrism , intercultural communication and social distance indicates a strong correlation between them. Intercultural communication has a negative correlation with the other two variables, but the correlation between ethnocentrism and social distance is positive. By controlling the effect of ethnocentrism on the relationships between \\\\\\\'intercultural communication\\\\\\\' and \\\\\\\'social distance\\\\\\\', the correlation coefficient decreases. That is, ethnocentrism weakens the effect of intercultural communication on social distance. So we can certainly conclude that the ethnic cultural communication leads to acculturation and amalgamation, and finally, reduces ethnocentrism and social distance.
