Abstract

A computer vision system was developed to evaluate the geometrical properties of small seeds and the results compared to the measurements obtained by a micrometer. The correlation found between the results of two methods for principal dimensions of wild sage seed with R2 values ranged between 0.64-0.99. The average projected area, sphericity and roundness determined by image processing were 3.11 mm2, 1.00 and 0.73, respectively. The average geometric mean diameter, arithmetic mean diameter, surface area and sphericity calculated theoretically based on micrometer data were 1.6847 mm, 1.7612 mm, 8.9123 mm2 and 0.73, respectively. The average unit mass, 1000 grain mass, volume, true density, bulk density and porosity were measured as 0.00274 g and 2.766 g, 2.84 mm3, 970 kgm-3, 907 kgm-3 and 7.01%, respectively. The static coefficient of friction on five structural surfaces increased from 0.262 for glass to 0.382 for rubber and plywood. The filling and funning angles of repose were established as 17.3o and 19.3o, respectively. The terminal velocity was 4.26 ms-1 and textural properties including rupture force, hardness and energy absorbed were determined as 1611 g, 1650 g, and 7147 g.s, respectively.
