Highly selective oxidation of benzylic and allylic alcohols was accomplished by strontium manganate (SrMn04) in the presence of Lewis acids in solution and under solvent-free conditions. Further oxidation of aldehydes to their carboxylic acids and also cleavage of carbon-carbon double bonds were not observed in this method.
