Title : ( On the transfer of culture-specific terms in dubbing: A case study )
Authors: vahid Mardani , Mohammad Reza Hashemi ,Abstract
As a recurrent translator s preoccupation, cultural references have always posed tremendous challenges to translators. Far from being a set of beliefs and values shared by a particular group or nation, culture constitutes the manner in which people attribute meaning to the world surrounding them; therefore, people’s understanding of the world and consequently their comprehension of a word, a text or a film depends on the cultural packaging of information in their mind. As such, accurate transfer of cultural terms is of high priority in the translators agenda, and it is especially the case in audio-visual translation when due to media constraints, namely those of time and space and lip synchronization, fewer solutions would be at the translator s disposal. This paper seeks to investigate the strategies utilized in dubbing for transferring culture-specific terms from English to Persian. To this end, the Persian dubbed version of American animated movie, Shrek, and its original English transcript were used. The potential problems were categorized and each was analyzed in terms of strategies utilized in the process of dubbing and transferring culture-specific terms into Persian.
