Abstract

In this research the effect of different irrigation levels and manure application on the quantity and quality characteristics of sweet basil (Persian name: Nazbuo) for organic production were studied. The experiments was set up as a factorial randomized complete block design with twelve treatments and five replications. The manure applied in four levels, zero (control), 5%, 10% and 15% w/w (equal to zero, 350, 700 and 1050g/7 kg soil in a pot) and irrigation at three levels including 100% (stress free), 70% and 50% FC during the period of rapid growth until harvest. The evapotranspiration rate was measured using two methods (daily weighing of the pots and evaporation loss of water from the pan) and the means used as consumed water of the plants. During the experiment, different morphological and physiological properties such as plant height and inflorescence, number and area of the leaves, fresh and dry weight of stem and leaf, LAI, SLA, LWR, LAR, RWC, SPAD, seed swelling factor, proline content, total soluble sugar and the amount and percentage of essential oils were estimated. The results indicated that using manure in stressed plants improved important properties of sweet basil significantly. Manure application improved plant height, leaf area and RWC, but decreased proline and total soluble sugars content. Water stress increased essential oil percentage but decreased essential oil yield. The best results on the essential oil percentage and yield, seed yield, swelling factor and growth factor was detected in 10% of manure. According to the results, manure has potential activity to improved secondary metabolites in sweet basil and by adjusting relations between soil and water in the plant reduce the severity of water stress.
