Smart Grid denotes the integration of all elements of a power system with a communication infrastructure. Nowadays, communication systems have been developed by multi layer architecture in which the transmission media is the lowest layer of these systems. The characteristics of the communication systems will be influenced by the characteristics of its media. Generally, transmission media can be classified as guided and unguided ones. In this paper, a brief summary of popular guided and unguided media used in power systems is presented. Then, the two types of media are compared with each other.
