Abstract
Purpose. Special digital libraries usually have special qualifications. Among them, digital libraries for literary works provide different influential works of literature which might generate a family of interrelated works. Due to current developments in information storage and retrieval, better indexing softwares and more capable search tools, it is technically possible to retrieve all related works. However, what makes current digital collections hard to use is the unstructured display of the retrieved results. The purpose of this paper is to propose a new approach in restructuring the display of search results based on the FRBR model and experts\\\' views as the main users of digital literary collections. Design, Methodology, Approach. FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) is a conceptual model proposed by IFLA which models the bibliographic universe in a meaningful framework. Its implementation is believed to address the problem of collocating related works in current systems. This paper, first deals with a system-oriented FRBRization of a digital library through mapping FRBR entities on 3 widely used metadata element sets (Unimarc, MODS, DC); In the second phase, it examines the FRBRization from a user-oriented perspective. For this purpose the Epic of Kings (A work by Ferdowsi the 12 A.D. Iranian epic poet) was selected as the test bed and a sample of 30 highly specialized experts in the field of Persian literature who were knowledgeable about this work were consulted. Their views on the logic of collocating related works were aligned with the FRBR concepts. Findings. Findings of this research show that it is possible to address the collocation problem of related literary works in a digital library solely through a system-oriented approach, but the user-oriented FRBRization shows added value not only through meaningful and more precise collocation but also through generating new knowledge on the user’s side about the whole bibliographic family and relationships. Originality, Value. Current FRBRized systems take the advantage of using FRBR crosswalks and this could be seen in their output and the way they display the search results; but this study proposes a new approach in FRBRizing literary digital libraries based on the experts as the target users of these systems. The main outcome is about how to develop a more meaningful collocation and arrangement in line with users’ logical expectations. Conclusion. Some concluding remarks have been made based on the added value of the proposed approach. Other possible technologies such as social tagging or innovative visualizations in literary digital libraries are also discussed briefly in this regard.
