Abstract
The LesserWhite-frontedGoose[Anser erythropus (Linnaeus,1758)]isoneofthemostthreatenedPalearcticgoose species,withtheFennoscandinaviansubpopulationinparticularhavingseenadrasticdeclineoverthelastcentury.In the 1990s,captive-bredLesserWhite-frontedGeesewereusedsuccessfullyforreintroductionandrestockinginSweden and Finland.ThediscoveryofGreaterWhite-frontedGoose[Anseralbifrons (Scopoli,1769)]mtDNAhaplotypesin some ofthesecaptive-bredbirds(Ruokonenetal.2000) suggestedthathybridisationhadoccurredduringcaptive propagationandledtothediscontinuationofthereleaseofcaptivegoslings.Herewereporttwohybridsof LesserGreaterWhite-frontedGeesethatwerecollectedontheirwinteringgroundsinEnglandin1936andHolland in 1966.BirdsfromwesternRussianormallydonotmigratesouthtoWesternEurope.Hence,thesebirdsmostlikely originatedfromtheFennoscandinaviansubpopulationandwerecollectedpriortothecommencementofthecaptive- breeding programmes.Bothspecimensshowaheterogeneoussetofmorphologicalcharacters,someofwhichshared with theputativeparentspeciesandothersbeingintermediatebetweenthetwoWhite-frontedGoosespecies.A CanonicalDiscriminantFunctionanalysispositionsbothspecimensbetweenthetwoputativeparentspecies,making their hybridstatuslikely.Weshow,thus,thathybridisationbetweenGreaterandLesserWhite-frontedGeesedoes occur naturally,albeitperhapsinfrequently,andarguethatthepresenceofGreaterWhite-frontedGoosemtDNA haplotypesinLesserWhite-frontedGoosemaybetheresultofthisnaturallyoccurringhybridisation.Ourdata provide additionalinformationonthedebatewhethertherestockingprogrammeswerehaltedfortherightreasonsand whetheritisdesirabletore-commencewiththereintroductionprogramme. & 2009ElsevierGmbH.Allrightsreserved.
