A famous result of Baer shows a nitely generated abelian group is capable if and only if the two largest invariant factors coincide. In this talk we intend to study some varieties to know what is the relation between varietal capability and invariant factors. For in- stance we show that a nitely generated abelian group is capable with respect to the variety of metabelian groups if and only if the three largest invariant factors are equal.
