Wheat is an important cereal and covers most of the agricultural plantation area in the world. Extensive research has been focus on the estimating wheat planted area, which is very important task specially for national and regional planning. One of the new methods for estimating wheat planted area, which is used in the developed countries, is remote sensing science and satellite data. These data have been used extensively to identify plant cover, estimating planted area and and health community. TERRA satellite, with 5 sensors, provides an opportunity to observe land, atmosphere and ocean. This study reports the results of estimating winter wheat planted area by using MODIS (one of the TERRA sensors) images, which are prepared for 16 days periods. The images have been used for winter wheat areas of Khorasan Razavi province (North East of IRAN) during agricultural season of 2004-05. Four different areas were selected for this study. These areas are wheat farm, mountain, dense vegetation cover and desert. Then some image processing techniques and statistical analysis were used to analysis this area. Using the image processing technique, we produced a map showing NDVI based on which, we calculated the wheat cultivated area. Our results showed that MODIS images (which are easily available) are an appropriate data for estimation and monitoring wheat-cultivated areas in a large scale.
