Abstract

Abstract Objectives It is realized that the surface of biomedical metallic implants covered by Fluorohydroxyapatite, [Ca10 (PO4)6(OH, F)], (FHA) as a biomaterial can create bioactivity of the implant and shorten healing time. Materials and methods In this work FHA, in the form of powders and of thin films on Titanium substrates, were synthesized by sol-gel spin coating method. Here, Ca(NO3)2.4H2O, P2O5, and NH4F were used to provide Ca-precursor, P- precursor and new fluorine reagent, respectively. The FHA powders were calcined and thin films were fired at temperatures ranging from 500-800ºC. The constituent of both powders and thin coating have been confirmed to be FHA using by XRD and FTIR. Results The TEM images with Scherrer equation have shown that the size of the FHA particles is in the range of nano-scale. The SEM images had shown that the thin films were dense, uniform and had a thickness of about 1~1.5μm. Conclusion The optimized calcination temperature for preparing of pure FHA nanopowders and thin films was found to be 600 ºC. NH4F as new fluorine reagent has several advantages in comparison with HPF6, which include simplicity and safety at work, easy availability and low cost.
