Grapevine is an important crop plant cultivated worldwide. Due to its economic importance, extensive reaserch has been caried out to reduce lossess incured by viruses on this crop. Most of published data by Iranian researchers have focused only on survey of nepoviruses in veinyards specially GFLV, using ELISA. Until now, nine viruses, four viroids and a phytoplasma have been reported from Iranian vineyards. Reported viruses belong to Nepovirus, Closterovirus, Ampelovirus, Maculavirus and Vitivirus genera. Molecular analysis have been performed only for three viruses including GFLV, GLRaV-1 and GVA. The results demonstrated that Iranian isolates might be significantly different from reported sequences in the databases. However further studies should clarify the relationship of viruses in Iran with those elsewhere. Molecular analysis of other grapevine viruses especially nepoviruses is an attractive fields of research for grapevine virology in Iran. Also, little effort has been devoted to the means of natural transmission of grapevine graft-transmissible agents.
