Abstract

Recently, considerable amount of wastewater containing dyes has been generated from many industries including textile, leader, paper, dye stuff, plastic and so on [1]. It is difficult to degrade dye materials because they are very stable to light and oxidation reactions [2]. Among the proposed methods, removal of dyes by adsorption is regarded as one of the competitive methods because of it’s high efficiency, feasibility and simplicity of operation [2, 3]. Methylene blue (MB) is one of the most common dying materials for wood, silk and cotton and it’s removal from water is very important [3]. In this work, Fe₃O₄@TiO₂ magnetic nanoparticles with core-shell structures were employed for removing of MB as a cationic dye. The nanoparticles were synthesized in the presence of SDS and CTAB which are an anionic and cationic surfactants, respectively. In fact, the surfactants interact with surface of the shell and modify the surface of the nanoparticles. The goal of this work was to study the effect of surfactants in the removal of dye (methylene blue) by Fe₃O₄@TiO₂ under different conditions, in order to find the optimum adsorption conditions. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models were applied to the experimental data properly.
