p-Nitrophenol is one of the most refractory substances present in industrial wastewaters because of their high stability and solubility in water. p-Nitrophenol is considered priority toxic pollutants by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the maximum allowed concentration in water is in the range of 1–20 ppb. The ever increasing discharge of these compounds into the environment has caused various problems in water and wastewater treatment systems because they can not be effectively treated by traditional technologies such as biological degradation, solvent extraction, and adsorption [1,2]. Ultrasonic irradiation as a green and novel approach in combination with the other methods was used for the efficient and complete decomposition and removal of phenolic compounds [3,4]. Also, Magnetic separation technique has the potential to achieve environmental separation of specific pollutant. In the present investigation, magnetic polymeric sorbent (MPS) was synthesized by modified on Leun and Sengupta method [5] and using anionic resin as polymeric base. p- Nitophenol removal was carried out by combination of MPS in the presence of ultrasonic irradiation and compared with the stirrer method. Several prominent factors such as the amount of sorbent (MPS), concentration of sorbate, contact time, intensity of ultrasound and temperature were investigated. Maximum adsorption capacity of MPS was found to be 435 mg/g in the presence of ultrasonic irradiation. Complete removal of p-nitrophenol (50 mg/L) was occurred in 15 minutes at 20oC by using 0.3 g of sorbent. In kinetic point of view, the removal of pollutant showed a pseudo-second order behavior.
