Abstract

Antisymmetric bifurcation in soil deformation behavior is analyzed, while the constitutive behavior is described by the tangential-subloading surface model. The bifurcations, including shear band and diffuse buckling, in a cylindrical soil specimen subjected to the compressive load under undrained conditions are discussed in detail. Thus, the conditions for shear band and diffuse buckling formation in relation to material properties and their state of stress, i.e. the stress-ratio and the normal-yield ratio are revealed. The general results of the present analysis are relevant for studying instabilities in undrained triaxial tests.
